You can expand the storage capacity of your Axentra Server by attaching USB hard drives to it. Each user will be able to use the extra space granted by these drives.

Supported USB Drives
Any USB hard drive which is Linux-compatible, should also be compatible with your Axentra Server. Linux-compatible USB CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives are also supported. Writing to recordable CD or DVD drives (such as CD-RW drives) is not supported.
Filesystems
The USB drive will be treated differently depending on the drive's filesystem.
- If the drive is formatted as EXT3, each user on your Axentra Server will get their own private area on the drive. A new folder will appear in each user's Files area with a name such as usbdrive1. Files placed in that folder will go on to the USB drive.
- Otherwise, a new folder will appear in the Common folder with a name such as usbdrive1. If the drive has a VFAT filesystem, then all users will be able to create, edit, and delete files on the USB drive. Other (alien) filesystems may be less permissive.
Backups
Your Axentra Server will allow you to schedule automated backups to a USB hard drive, but only one formatted with an EXT3 filesystem, for security reasons. EXT3 is the only supported filesystem which will protect the privacy of your backup from other users. For more information, see Backups.
Problems
- Not all USB drives are Linux-compatible. A drive may seem to work fine at first, but fail during a long file operation.
- Axentra is working continually to improve USB support. If you have a problem with your USB drive, and can't find the solution in this article, contact Axentra technical support.
