Problems Sending Email

Can't send email from outside the LAN

If you are on a different network from your Axentra Server -- for example, if your Server is at work, and you are at home -- you may have trouble sending email if you are using your Server as your outgoing email server. This can be a confusing and frustrating problem if you have used the exact same settings from behind your Server without trouble.

This is most commonly caused by your local ISP (in this example, your home ISP) blocking port 25. Fortunately, the workaround is straightforward. Your ISP will have provided you with its own SMTP server to use when sending email (probably in the form smtp.your_isp.com). You need to use this server, along with the username and password given you by your ISP, in your outgoing email settings. Note: You can still send email from your Axentra Server email account using this method; all that's changed is that you are using another server to transmit the email onto the internet.

Another workaround for this problem would be to configure an alternate SMTP port on your Server as described on the Port 25 blocking page, and to specify your Axentra Server (with the new alternate port) as your outgoing email server.

Sending an email takes too long

If you are experiencing a delay of about 20 seconds when trying to send emails using an email client such as Outlook through the server and if the email eventually does get sent, the cause is probably your firewall. When the client contacts the server and initiates an SMTP request, the server tries to verify the client by contacting the 'auth' port ( port 113 ). If the firewall is blocking this port and dropping such requests the server will try a few times resulting in the delay. The firewall should either reject connections to port 113 instantly or handle them properly. This usually can be configured on your firewall. To make sure that this is the cause, disable the firewall and try sending an email. See if it makes a difference.

Relaying denied (error 513)

If you are using an email client to send emails out using your Axentra Server as your outgoing mail server and you are getting the "Relaying denied" error back from your Axentra Server, it is probably because you are not authenticating yourself. Make sure your outgoing mail server settings in your email client has the authentication option selected.

Error 421: "Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL connections"

The most common cause of this is when an Antivirus on the system has been set to check outgoing emails.
Simply disable checking of outgoing mail in your Antivirus settings.

Problems Receiving Email

People sending email to my Server get delay and bounce messages

If someone tries to send an email to you at your Axentra Server email account, but receives messages about mail delivery failure, it's possible that your MX record is incorrect. You will need to contact your domain name registrar to have it corrected.

If your Axentra Server is directly connected to the internet, this problem may also be caused because you have configured your Server to use a static IP address, when in fact it receives a dynamically-assigned IP address from your ISP. Ensure that you have selected the correct settings on the ISP Connection page of the admin area.
